The following handouts are easy to print and have readily accessible when you are researching and writing your assignments and essays. 

What is APA style?

When editors or teachers ask you to write in "APA style," they are referring to a specific way to present and structure of your written work. APA style is used in many social and behavioral science disciplines.

APA style includes guidelines for:

  • line spacing, margins, page headers
  • acceptable fonts
    • 10 pt Lucinda san unicode; 11 pt Arial; 11 pt Calibria; 11 pt Georgia; 12 pt Times New Roman
  • punctuation and abbreviations
  • section headings
  • tables and figures
  • citations

Consistent use of APA style helps with clear communication between members of an academic community. 

The last item in that list - citations - will require the most of your attention. You must document - cite - all the sources (articles, books, websites, videos...) you learn and borrow from when writing your paper.  And different kinds of sources need to be described in different ways. 

Each citation appears in two places in your paper: Once, in brief format, in the body of your paper - these are called in-text citations - and once, in more detail, at the end of your paper - these are called references.  You present all your detailed  references in a 'reference list' at the end of your paper.
