Francis Adu-Febiri, PhD, Sociology

Biography:

Francis Adu-Febiri holds a Sociology PhD from the University of British Columbia. He is a sociology professor and former Chair of the Social Sciences Department at Camosun, Victoria, BC. In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. He has published extensively on diversity, racialization, ethnicity, tourism, human factor development, and globalization. Dr. Adu-Febiri is the author of First Nations Students Talk Back: Voices of a Learning People and also the co-author of Succeeding From the Margins of Canadian Society: A Strategic Resource for New Immigrants, Refugees and International Students.

This paper examines the impact of China's media globalization on the nationalistic orientation of individual members of Chinese society. Using a social survey method based on indices of globalization, the study measures the level of individual attachment to Chinese nationalism and correlates it with global content of TV programs accessible to sample of Chinese living in two cities in southern China.

Emotions, morals, and spirit are virtually excluded from our classrooms not because of the lack of innovative curricula and pedagogical strategies for educating for wholeness that can produce higher level of positive human factor qualities in students or the lack of epistemological and utilitarian significance. Rather the main challenge is the lack of rewards and support in the existing political economy for educators and students to pursue these curricula and pedagogical innovations for the purposes of honing the positive qualities of the human factor.
