Troubleshooting library eresources

Tips for accessing Camosun Library eresources such as ejournals, ebooks, databases, streaming videos on or off campus.

Accessing ebooks

Accessing library ebooks

You can read Camosun Library ebooks on your desktop computer using an internet browser or PDF viewer. Some are also available on mobile devices. The following factors may influence how you access a particular ebook:

  • type of device
  • software or app
  • ebook vendor or provider
  • format (PDF, ePub etc.)
  • licensing restrictions

For more information on specific collections, refer to our Ebook guide.

Downloading ebooks

Ebook download options vary by publisher and licensing terms. Some may require special software or accounts separate from your Camosun library account.

For example, if you wish to download EBSCO ebooks, you will need to register for an optional MyEBSCOhost account. This is not connected to any of your existing Camosun accounts and any personal information you provide may be subject to U.S. privacy laws.

Refer to individual vendor support sites for more information.

eTextbooks

eTextbooks

The business model for digital textbook publishers is based on direct sales to students. The following major publishers will not sell digital textbooks to libraries:

  • Pearson
  • Cengage
  • Houghton
  • McGraw Hill
  • Oxford University Press Canada (Textbook Division)
  • Elsevier imprints  such as: (including Mosby and  Saunders)  and
  • Thieme

The library will continue to make every effort to provide students access to materials where they can through the print reserve collection and to support instructors in exploring alternatives.

Students

Contact the bookstore to purchase individual copies of eTextbooks or speak with your instructor.

Instructors

If you're thinking about using a library ebook in your course, check with your Subject Liaison Librarian to ensure it is licensed for multiple simultaneous users.
