Assessment: About

History, Purpose and Goals

The Assessment for Learning Committee was established in 2023, building on the work of the previous Assessment for Learning Working Group, which was formed under the sponsorship of John Borass, former Provost and Vice-President, Education and Innovation. The original group was established in response to student concerns about course assessments. Over time, its mandate expanded to support assessment practices more broadly across the College. To this end, the group established a set of guiding principles for assessment at the College and developed a series of LibGuides to help faculty implement practices that support and enhance teaching and learning.

The current committee, housed within the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), and consisting of faculty and staff from various departments and roles across the College, was established to continue and build upon the important work already done.

Given the ongoing and significant shifts in higher education, including increasing diversity, the rise of online and hybrid learning, the growing influence of artificial intelligence, and the increased focus on equity and inclusion in assessment, there is a compelling need to further understand and support assessment practices that enhance teaching and learning.

Additionally, the growing movement toward alternative assessment methods, such as ungrading, authentic assessment, and peer- and self-assessment, which aim to provide more meaningful and personalized feedback on student learning, underscores the need for a closer look at how assessments are designed and applied. Recognising this need, the Committee seeks to help faculty and staff adopt assessment strategies that meet the evolving needs of students, ensuring equitable and effective learning experiences for all.
