IEEE Citation Style

Citing images and graphs

  • Images, graphs, and diagrams are all referred to as 'figures'.
  • Give your figures a consecutive number in the order that you present them in your paper, but abbreviate 'Figure' to 'Fig' and add a period after the number. For example, 'Fig. 2.'
  • Give each figure a title, capitalizing the first word and omitting 'A', 'An', or 'The'.
  • Follow the figure title with 'Adapted from' and cite the source for the figure.
  • Use the same citation format you would for articles, books, or any other source:
    • in the body of your paper, include the citation number in square brackets.
    • In your reference list, provide all the citation information your reader would need to find the source.
  • The figure title and citation should appear below the figure.
