• If an original source cannot be located, it should not be cited.
IEEE citation style
Bibliography
is a list of documents consulted for a specific essay or assignment.
Or, a comprehensive list of works on a specific subject, for example, The Bibliography of Bioethics.
Citation or referencing style
is the method used to format your citations. Some commonly used formats are MLA, Chicago, APA, Vancouver and Footnote.
Descriptive elements
are the necessary parts of a reference. A few examples of these elements are: author, title, edition, date of publication, internet address, etc.
Medium Designator
For online sources, specify [Type of medium] after the title, as well as the document's location.
Online
is a generic term used to describe documents available from the internet or from databases or published in a digitised format.
In-text citations
A reference number used to signal that the words or ideas quoted or referred to at that point are not your own. The number is given to locate the full reference in the Works cited or References list.
References
are an accurate and complete description of a source of information. The reference must include sufficient descriptive elements to identify and locate the resource.
This guide provides examples of the resources most often cited by students at Camosun College. If you can't find an example of the specific resource that you are using, please try the additional resource links or seek clarification from your instructor.
Reference numbers match the the order of appearance in the text regardless of source type or format. The same number is used in all subsequent quotes or references from that source.
