Subject heading searching

The terms and names Indigenous and Aboriginal peoples use to describe themselves may not be reflected in the subject headings of library organizing systems. For this reason, current library subject language and descriptors may not reflect the preferred language of particular groups and may be considered offensive or controversial. However, terminology still in use by the Library of Congress and other information organizing institutions that establish indexing rules may be helpful for conducting a comprehensive search of content by or about Indigenous Peoples. For this reason, using these subject-heading terms may bring relevant search results worth reviewing.

Use these subject headings to search for books in the catalogue to get focused results:

  • You can also search for specific groups by searching individual group names. For example, Haida, Salish or Inuit.
  • You can also search multiple spellings by using OR: Ojibwe OR Ojibwa OR Ojibway
