HLTH 111: Indigenous Peoples' Health

The FNHA is the health and wellness partner to over 200 diverse First Nations communities and citizens across BC.​

The First Nations Health Council is part of a unique health governance structure that includes the First Nations Health Authority and the First Nations Health Directors Association. Collectively, this First Nations health governance structure works with BC First Nations to achieve our shared vision.

The FNHDA is one of four governance partners within the made-in-BC Health Governance Structure created by Chiefs and leaders through the 2011 Consensus Paper and Resolution: BC First Nations Perspectives on a New Health Governance. The partners within this Governance Structure – the FNHDA, the First Nations Health Authority and the First Nations Health Council – share a common vision for Healthy, Self-Determining and Vibrant BC First Nation Children, Families and Communities.

The FNHTA sets out 85 recommendations to federal, provincial and territorial governments. These cover a wide range of policy areas all aimed at stabilizing profoundly underfunded health programs, and increasing self-determination of First Nations health in keeping with inherent, Treaty and international rights.

The Health Unit is mandated to protect, maintain, promote, support and advocate for First nations inherent, Treaty and constitutional rights, holistic health and the well-being of First Nations

The National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) is a national Indigenous organization established in 2005 by the Government of Canada and funded through the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to support First Nations, Inuit, and Métis public health renewal and health equity through knowledge translation and exchange. The NCCIH is hosted by the University of Northern BC (UNBC) in Prince George, BC. The NCCIH has a resource library with a number of collections on specific topics including cultural safety and early childhood development

The First Nations Information Governance Centre is an independent, apolitical, and technical non-profit organization operating with a special mandate from the Assembly of First Nations’ Chiefs-in-Assembly. The First Nations Information Governance Centre envisions that every First Nation will achieve data sovereignty in alignment with its distinct world view. Publications adn research includes topics related to health and well-being.

The Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association (Formerly the 'Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada') exists "to improve the health of Indigenous people, by supporting Indigenous Nurses and by promoting the development and practice of Indigenous Health Nursing".

Partnering with Indigenous peoples for wellness through research and education

"CINE was created in response to a need expressed by Aboriginal Peoples for participatory research and education to address their concerns about the integrity of their traditional food systems."

Located in Canada’s north, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Research (ICHR) is an independent research organization devoted to health research relevant to the circumpolar regions and their people.

Funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research since December 1, 2001, the Network for Aboriginal Mental Health Research (NAMHR) is committed to building capacity for mental health and addictions research and knowledge translation in remote, rural and urban settings by working in close partnership with Aboriginal organizations and communities. The priority of the Network is to develop research capacity.

An excellent resource on issues related to women's reproductive health and sexual health topics. Site is hosted by the Aboriginal Health Initiative which was formed in 1993 in response to the growing recognition of the sexual and reproductive health disparity between Aboriginal people and the rest of Canada.

The Native Youth Sexual Health Network (NYSHN) is an organization by and for Indigenous youth that works across issues of sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice throughout the United States and Canada.

The Indigenous Food Systems Network Website was developed by the WGIFS and is designed to allow individuals and groups involved with Indigenous food related action, research, and policy reform to network and share relevant resources and information.
