Citing Sources

What does it mean to "cite my sources"?

Citing means acknowledging the information sources you used to support the ideas in your academic work.  Your sources may include books, journal or magazine articles, newspapers, websites, images, videos, or many other kinds of sources.

Why is it so important?

  • gives credit to the authors of others where credit is due
  • supports your academic integrity by clearly separating your own work from the work of others
  • provides a trail for others to locate the resources you used
  • provides evidence of your research
  • helps you avoid plagiarizing
