Simply Analytics

Making a custom geographic boundary

It is possible to combine neighboring areas into a single map in Simply Analytics. Here is an example combining the Census Subdivisions of Victoria, Esquimalt and Oak Bay.

Step one is to understand what neighboring geographic areas you want to combine, and develop a list of their names. A good way to do this within Simply Analytics is to begin with a map of a wider area - in this case the Victoria Census Metropolitan Area - and select the subcategory of land you want to combine in the menu above (in this case, 'Census Subdivisions).  Then click the 'i' menu in the bar on the left of the map.

Click on each one of the sub-areas you want to include in your custom map. You will see the name of each area as you select it.

When you have clicked on each of the subareas you want to include in your custom map, select the 'Locations' icon on the left >> 'custom locations' >> 'create new custom locations'.

Give your custom map a name. In this case, I am calling mine 'Around downtown'.

In the dropdown menu to the right, click the tiny icon on the right side of the menu to expose the list of the boundaries you have just viewed. Click on the place names in the list to add them to your custom map.
