How to avoid academic violations

How to avoid an academic integrity violation:

  • Be honest
  • Do your own work
  • Contribute your own thoughts and ideas
  • Submit original work
  • Collaborate on assignments only when permitted by instructor--if in doubt ASK!
  • Quote and paraphrase properly
  • Always give credit to all ideas, writing, images  that you borrow
  • Seek help from college support people if you need it--again, if in doubt ASK!
  • Do not help others commit a violation

Consequences of academic dishonesty

Academic integrity violations are taken seriously and can have serious consequences regardless if they are intentional or unintentional.

Academic consequences may include:

  • getting a zero on your assignment
  • getting a failing grade for the course
  • losing a co-op placement
  • being suspended from Camosun

 

Personal consequences may include:

  • being denied a  letter of reference
  • being bribed or coerced by an online company you paid for services            
  • not learning the course content
  • not being prepared for subsequent courses or licensing exams
  • personal disappointment

Camosun College support person guidelines

Camosun College recognizes that institutional processes can be seen as overwhelming and complex to some, and having a support person who is knowledgeable and resourceful can reduce anxiety and stress for a student. Students have the right to identify anyone of their choosing to be their support person throughout informal and formal institutional processes (Guidelines: Camosun College support person).

A support person may be:

  • A family member
  • A Camosun College Student Society representative
  • An Elder
  • A friend
  • A case worker
  • A counsellor
