Academic Accommodation's Relationship to Essential Learning Requirements

A guide for course instructors/departments/schools on academic accommodation as it relates to essential learning requirements

Learning Outcomes and Academic Task Requirements

Instructors, course designers, departments and programs develop learning outcomes for courses, many being amenable to academic accommodation.

All learning outcomes and academic task requirements may not be expressed in the official educational approvals documents through Ed-Co or on a syllabus/course outline. This means that though they may not be explicitly written down, these will still be subject to considerations for academic accommodation.

When considering the requirement to adapt to an accommodation, course instructors, departments and the college is expected to take measures to determine if the requirement is essential and cannot be adapted or can be adapted and is subject to accommodation.

Examples for consideration:

  • ways of presenting course content and receiving student responses to that content
  • tools students use in learning and evaluation
  • the settings in which students learn and are evaluated
  • considerations around timing/scheduling and durations of teaching/learning/assessment
