The type of business or service that will succeed in any given city or province depends on the area’s demographics and the competition. A first step is to check out the data on population, housing, and income … the type of information which is collected by Statistics Canada and BC Stats.

Provides demographic, social, and economic information about the people of British Columbia.
Community Information Tool This link opens in a new window
A free resource from the BC Government that provides access to community and regional overviews, assets & infrastructure, and socio-economic data for the entire province. No login required; use the drop down menu to start your research e.g. I am a researcher, interested in learning more about the province, etc.
Data tables from Statistics Canada This link opens in a new window
Statistics Canada provides fast and easy access to a large range of the latest statistics available in Canada.
CANSIM tables are now referred to as data tables; there are several ways to access them on the Statistics Canada website:
1. through the Data tab on the website toolbar
2. through the Subjects tab & then select a subject area
3. through the Statcan general search box

Select either the Residential or Commercial listings tab, conduct a search on Victoria (or Saanich, Esquimalt, etc.), select a listing & then review the Neighbourhood and Statistics (demographics) sections for data profiles.

Produces research on issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world including but not limited to: journalism and media; internet, science and technology; global attitudes and trends; and U.S. social and demographic trends. Includes access to downloadable datasets.
