Welcome to Camosun’s comprehensive guide to institutional priorities, principles and practices regarding the use of artificial intelligence, with a specific focus on Microsoft Copilot Chat.
As AI tools become increasingly integrated into academic and administrative environments, it is essential that Camosun faculty and staff are familiar with both the opportunities and the responsibilities associated with their use. This resource has been developed to support you in navigating AI technologies thoughtfully, ethically and in alignment with our commitment to cultivating a work environment that values people, service, lifelong learning, and individual and organizational well-being.
In this guide you will find clear explanations of the college’s expectations around AI use. Whether you're exploring Copilot for the first time or seeking to refine how you use AI in your teaching, this resource aims to provide practical, policy-aligned support.
— Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft
The AI Task Force made four thematic recommendations to the college executive. The taskforce supported each theme with a specific action to pursue, as shown in the following table. Updates on these actions and initiatives will be shared as work progresses.
| Build awareness to facilitate adoption of values-based AI use | Policy review |
| Address academic integrity | Values based AI: foundation of Camosun’s digital transformation |
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force was formed in September 2024 to explore the impact of AI and to make recommendations in the areas of:
Teaching and learning
How will generative AI be integrated or limited within curriculum and instruction to enhance student learning and engagement? What are the implications for assessment? What resources are needed for adaptation and what supports will students need? Educational policies, including the Academic Integrity policy, will be reviewed for possible revisions.
Service Delivery
How can AI tools be used to enhance the experience of students and employees? What are the implications for privacy, equity and security?
Administration
How can generative AI be used by employees in their daily work to streamline and improve administrative processes? And what risks and challenges might emerge from these workplace changes?
Technology and tools
How will generative AI affect the technology landscape of the college? Considerations will include licensing and choice of tools; integration into major systems; cybersecurity risks; and other enterprise risks.
The task force team was appointed by the Provost and Vice President, Education & Innovation. It was co-chaired by Sybil Harrison (Interim Associate Vice-President, Education and Innovation) and Evan Hilchey (Associate Vice-President, Administration).
An employee survey, consultation sessions and results from the annual student experience survey helped guide the work of the AI task force.
The consultation and surveys provided a point-in-time view of how AI is being used. The survey also provided data on what concerns the community saw as a result of the rapid emergence of AI, and also what opportunities the new technology provides.
Explore the key findings of these surveys and collaborations on the survey sub-page.

Ruthanne Orihuela, Associate Vice-President (Student Success) and Evan Hilchey, Associate Vice-President (Administration) provide strategic leadership on issues related to artificial intelligence.
